Tryout Season: A Devotional for Cheerleaders
Cheerleaders across the nation are in the final stretch of their seasons. With football games long over and the basketball season coming to a close, they are shifting their focus from sideline cheers to getting new tumbling skills.
Improving your skills and perfecting routines are certainly important, but it is easy to lose sight of our priorities and values in the hype of tryouts. Every year we see teammates grow distant as they compare themselves to each other while trying to figure out who will and who will not make the squad.
1 Corinthians 9:24-25 says, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
In times of pressure, it is easy to forget how the Lord wants us to act. It is easy to put yourself before others and forget the love and kindness He has so graciously shown us. As Christians, God calls us to follow his word and put the eternal goal ahead of all else.
We encourage cheerleaders to give this tryout season to the Lord. We challenge you to run the race in a way that glorifies Him. Whether that means helping a friend with new routines, leading prayer at tryouts or simply wishing another cheerleader good luck, you will be happier with the race you have run no matter the outcome.
