Spotlight On: Marilou Braswell
Marilou Braswell, the FCA Director of Cheerleading, holds a special place in the cheerleading world. Her accolades and achievements include being a three-year University of Georgia cheerleader, a two-time UGA cheerleading captain, and an NCAA College All-American her senior year of college. Then in 1993, she returned to UGA as the head cheerleading coach where she coached until 2004. She then went on to be the Dean of Women at Whitefield Academy in Atlanta. In 2007, Marilou became the Director of FCA Cheer. Given that this is the 10-year anniversary of FCA Cheer, Marilou explained, “FCA Cheer has been such a blessing, and I am humbled to be the director of this amazing ministry that changes the hearts and lives of young people all over the country while also providing excellence in cheerleading.”
While Marilou feels that FCA Cheer and its ministry have been a blessing in her life, many of the cheerleading instructors and coaches who have been a part of camp believe it is them who are “blessed to know such an incredible woman of God” (Catie Rawl, 2017 Jr. Huddle Leader). Sara Swain, a cheerleading coach at Jeff Davis High School, felt that Marilou was truly sent from God to work the camp she attended. After learning about the sudden passing of a coworker right before camp, Sara said, “Marilou helped me that week to remember that God is a big God, but He is oh so personal to each of us. He knows us intimately and loves us. He knows our problems and challenges and can handle them.” She finished by adding that she can’t imagine an FCA camp without Marilou, which is a sentiment the entire FCA Cheer Ministry echoes.
