National Compliment Day: A Devotional for Cheerleaders
It is National Compliment Day and we here at FCA Cheer think that today is really special. We believe compliments are a powerful way to use our words. Compliments encourage and uplift others, and paying someone a compliment shows kindness, compassion, and love. It is also the mark of a true friend.
Proverbs 16:24 says, “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Isn’t that a beautiful metaphor? Likening kind words to a honeycomb that nourishes your body and soul is an amazing way to think about the innate power our words have on others and ourselves. Showing kindness through how you speak is a wonderful tool that the Lord has given us, but it’s not always easy to use “gracious words.”
In trying circumstances, it can be hard to be kind to others. Maybe you are in a disagreement with a friend or do not see eye-to-eye with a family member. In situations like that, it is especially hard to speak kindly. We just want to spew our frustrations onto whomever is on the receiving end. We want those feelings to be heard, and that is a natural human desire. However, in Colossians 3:12 we are instructed that as “God’s chosen people” we are to clothe ourselves with “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” By no means in this an easy task, but God calls us to be different from a world where things like heated confrontation on social media are the norm.
God wants us to show the same kind of love to others that we have so graciously received from Him. Let this serve as motivation to strive for kindness in all that you do. You will stand out from the world and you will be known for your grace and compassion. Isn’t this such a better reputation than the opposite of those virtues? We think so.
In closing, we encourage you to give at least one meaningful, heartfelt, and genuine compliment today. Maybe try to compliment someone you might not normally talk to. Perhaps even a stranger. You never know how one kind word will change someone’s day.
